Marcy Paulson
From the moment Marcy Paulson picked up a recorder in fourth grade music class, she was hooked. Since then, her passion for music has prompted her to pursue dozens of musical instruments from every part of the world. Paulson performs Early-American and Celtic music on the fiddle, tin whistle, and Irish flute. Her husband accompanies her on banjo, ukulele, piano, and upright bass.
For over a year, Paulson has combined a love of writing with her fascination for music as Feature Writer for Suite 101’s Musical Instruments Section. She’s had the privilege of interviewing such musical giants as ukulele master, Jake Shimabukuro; Grammy winning harmonica player, Howard Levy; and You Tube’s beatbox flute sensation, Greg Pattillo. She’s also enjoyed speaking with expert instrument makers including Karl Ahrens of Mountain Ocarinas, John Stillwell of Ancient Territories Native American Flutes, and Arthur Stephens of the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra.
Paulson is proud to offer her own experience on topics such as teaching children to play music, instrument repair, songwriting, learning music by ear, purchasing a quality musical instrument, crafting folk instruments, music theory, and beginner lessons. As long as there’s a new instrument to learn, a catchy tune to try, and an intriguing musician to chat with, Paulson will keep playing and writing.
